What Stories Will You Tell This Thanksgiving?
Thanksgiving is almost here, which means someone will inevitably ask, “So what do you actually do all day at work?”
Hey friends,
Thanksgiving is almost here, which means someone will inevitably ask, “So what do you actually do all day at work?”
I’ve been thinking a lot about stories lately.
This week I watched a job offer almost disappear because a guy’s emails weren’t “polished” enough. References were perfect, work was great, but the commas weren’t.
We kept the offer. People aren’t their worst email (and his wife just had emergency surgery—life > grammar).
Then there’s the carpenter I know: incredible at his craft, gets paid cash on the side, proud of every piece he builds. Also terrible with money, smokes too much, been bankrupt twice.
His story is messy and human and impossible to forget.
Most VP marketers I talk to? They struggle to tell even one story that doesn’t sound like a corporate deck. There profession is to tell interesting stories, yet their career story reads like the back of a shampoo bottle.
If you dig deep within yourself, you will find where you are different.
If you are really building something (career, product, company, life, etc.) you will have messy parts—failed launches, weird side quests, nights we almost quit, family squabbles—and turn them into something people actually remember.
I’m still learning how to do that myself. Every week I sit down to write this newsletter I’m half terrified it’ll land flat. I use AI to help shape the drafts (yes, including this one—hi Grok), but the stories are mine. The goal is simple: figure it out in public, share whatever might be useful, and hopefully help a few of you feel less alone while you build.
That’s really all Creator’s Club is: I am sharing stories in hopes of finding other people who are doing the something similar and why not do it together…
So this Thanksgiving, I’m grateful for every one of you who reads these, replies, shares your wins and faceplants, and keeps showing up.
If you’ve been thinking about joining the Creator’s Club, maybe this is the week. No fancy pitch—just real people writing, shipping, and growing together.
Happy Thanksgiving. Go tell a good (true) story.
Ben
P.S. First 20 people who join (or gift a membership) before Monday get entered to win a full year of Sumato Coffee—fresh beans shipped to your door every month. I’ll announce the winner next week. Reply “COFFEE” after you join so I know you’re in.
